Our approach to hydrogen production
The decisive criterion for successful hydrogen production is, quite simply, the functionality of the overall system. H2 Energy offers complete turnkey solutions and takes care of both the individual subsystems (electrolyzer, compressor, storage, etc.) and the connection of these subsystems to the overall system. This last step, which also includes the overall control system of the plant, is crucial and makes the plants designed by H2 Energy safe and robust.
H2 Energy specializes in hydrogen production plants through proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis. In an electrochemical process, the oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2) molecules of water (H2O) are separated and collected. With PEM technology, the gases are separated by a solid membrane and the hydrogen can be compressed during the process. This means that significantly less energy is required for compression to the storage pressure of 350 bar.
The hydrogen can be stored temporarily without storage losses. The electrochemistry enables highly dynamic operation in the range of 0–100% of the electrolyzer’s rated power. This offers electricity producers a new way of using electricity to produce a storable gas (hydrogen) to balance production and demand.
Green hydrogen through water electrolysis

Niedergösgen
The first commercial plant for producing green hydrogen was put into operation at the run-of-river power plant from Alpiq in Niedergösgen in the first half of 2020. With an output of 2 MW, it is still among the largest plants in Switzerland for the production of green hydrogen for commercial use in emission-free heavy transport. The facility in Niedergösgen can produce up to 300 tons of green hydrogen per year, ensuring the annual consumption of around 40-50 fuel cell electric trucks or 1700 fuel cell electric cars. Three swap containers can be filled with 350 kg of green hydrogen per day.
Kubel (St. Gallen)
The second commercial hydrogen production plant in Switzerland is located at the run-of-river power plant in Kubel owned by SAK (St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG). The plant is operational since 2023.
This completely privately financed plant was adapted to the limited space and very strict noise regulations on site and has been supplying the eastern part of Switzerland with up to 300 tons of green hydrogen per year since 2023. In the filling part of the plant, three swap containers can be filled with 440 kg of green hydrogen per day.
