Esbjerg goes Hydrogen

H2 Energy Europe plans the world’s biggest Hydrogen Production Plant in Esbjerg, Denmark. With a capacity of 1 GW, the plant will convert green electricity into hydrogen, which can be used directly in trucks and other heavy land-based transport.

Hydrogen production plant in Esbjerg

H2 Energy Europe, a joint venture of Trafigura and H2 Energy, plans to invest a billion EUR in the construction of one of Europe’s largest ‘Power-to-X’ plant in Esbjerg. The plant will convert green electricity into hydrogen, which can be used directly by trucks and other heavy land transport. Its capacity of 1 GW of hydrogen production will make it possible to supply green hydrogen corresponding to the annual fuel consumption of more than 10,000 trucks (more than 1/3 of all trucks in Denmark).

H2 Energy is a pioneer in making hydrogen-fueled trucks a commercial reality. The joint venture with Trafigura is building on the existing success story in Switzerland, where an ecosystem was built to get trucks and other heavy transport on the roads with green hydrogen. The use case of hydrogen in long-haul transportation is particularly interesting because trucks demand a system that can rapidly operate at scale, since a truck uses 30 to 50 times more hydrogen than a passenger car.
